Mountain Film Release: Choosing to Live

By Jeff Bartlett

While mourning her late husband, Sarah Hornby craved an opportunity to connect with him through his biggest passion. Her goal was simple. In a single year, she would attempt all 10 routes he created while researching his Bikepacking in the Canadian Rockies guidebook. As she pedalled, her story transformed. From sadness and loss to a profound celebration of both his life and her own unique journey, she was choosing to live.

Both Sarah’s journey and the film celebrate her late husband, Ryan Correy. It was an ideal tribute for Ryan because his life was often shaped by ambition cycling adventures. He raced the Tour Divide, which stretches from Banff, Alberta, to Antelope Wells, New Mexico, twice; cycled the Pan American Highway from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, to Ushuaia, Argentina; and completed the Race Across America. When he moved to Canmore, Alberta, he founded Bikepack Canada to help build a Canadian-focused community around his biggest passion.

During the 2017 summer, just days after completing his research for the guidebook that established 10 backcountry routes and winning the 24-hours of Adrenalin Mountain Bike Race, Ryan was diagnosed with stage-4 colon cancer. Just nine months later, he died at his home in Canmore, Alberta

The film was created in collaboration between Jeff Bartlett Media and Stirl and Rae Media House.
