Letter from the Editor: Volume 5

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR:
CANADIAN ROCKIES ANNUAL, VOL. 5

By Meghan J. Ward

“Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards.” – Søren Kierkegaard

I had this letter ready: written, edited, proofread and laid out for the magazine you’re holding. I wrote to you about why people choose to live in the mountains. Beyond the obvious – our unparalleled access to wilderness, the mountain lifestyle, and the privilege of being surrounded by beauty – I wrote about the Rockies dwellers, past and present, who have shaped this place and enriched our lives. I remarked how our mountain communities have a level of “stoke” and inspiration that I have not encountered anywhere else. I wrote about the responsibility we have for the future of this place, and asked the question: What will the culture and environment of the Canadian Rockies look like in 100 years?

Then something called COVID-19 made its presence known here in Canada. In the past few days, our community has been asked to cancel gatherings, avoid contact and isolate ourselves, all in the name of collectively battling the transmission of the virus. We have come together by separating. In a flash, our lives have been turned upside-down and our perspective has shifted.

Our team works hard to create evergreen content, so that no matter when you pick up the magazine you’ll be able to relate to the material. But, from one proofread to the next, the evergreen nature of many articles has been dramatically altered as the realities and fallout of the virus settle in.

This year, the magazine acts as a time capsule: life before COVID-19. Yet my conclusion from my original letter is still the same. Volume 5 reminds us that we all play a role in shaping this place we hold so dear. Now, more than ever, we’ll need to come together as a community to face whatever the future has in store.
