Jasper is incredible any time of the year, but never does the town feel more authentic than during winter. And there’s no better way to experience winter in the mountains than via the Jasper in January festival (January 10-27, 2019)!

This year’s 30th-anniversary bash promises to be better than ever, with a new series of FREE live shows, both musical and comedic, happening each festival weekend. Whether you’re a yearly attendee or have never before been to Jasper, this is the year to join the fun. Here are 8 great reasons to check it out:

1/ Jasper in January After Dark

Free live shows. All festival long. This year, to celebrate Jasper in January’s third decade of winter revelry, the festival is getting a whole lot louder. A new series of FREE live shows featuring acclaimed musicians like Sloan, Odds and SkiiTour, along with comedians from across the country are coming to the mountains, and with performances every weekend of the festival there’s no shortage of nighttime entertainment. Check out the full line-up here.

2/ Frosty’s Fat Bike Race

Experience winter cycling at its finest and funnest with this fat bike race, which follows Jasper’s best trails and brings out both pros and first-timers. For the latter crowd who may or may not have their own fat bike, rentals are available! And if the perfect joy of this unique and healthy sport isn’t enough to get you to the start line, there’s also a total cash purse of $5,000 for the top three men and women finishers of Saturday’s endurance race. Can’t make it to the race? Rent fat bikes all winter long from The Bench Bike Shop.

4/ ATCO Street Party

An annual favourite, this can’t-miss street party on Saturday, Jan. 26, features street performers, live music from SkiiTour, food, games and an ice bar (which may just be the best kind of bar). When the clock strikes 9 p.m., gather beneath the starry winter sky for a spectacular fireworks show in Centennial Park. Oh, and did we mention it’s all free? Don’t forget to dress for the weather!

The friendly folks at Cold Fire Creek Dogsledding ensure it’s a wonderful experience for all ages.

7/ Whiskey, Wine and Hops

Fine wines, spirits and beers, OH MY! Don’t miss this luscious evening of sampling local and international boozy creations alongside a delicious spread of tapas. Chat with award-winning vintners and bring out your inner sommelier with tracking and rating sheets that will help you remember your fav tipples, even if your memory is a little vague by the next morning. Cheers!

8/ Food-A-Palooza

Get ready to eat. This culinary crawl features small plates and beverage pairings at some of Jasper’s tastiest establishments. Sample the goods at restaurants, such as Coco’s Café, Downstream, Evil Dave’s Grill, Jasper Brewing Co., and much more. Get ready for raspberry white chocolate scones, Mediterranean street fries, garlic shrimp, Jasper Honey Bear beer and much more!

Want more comfort food? Come out for the Annual Chili Cook-Off to try fantastic local made-from-scratch recipes from competing teams in themed booths. There will be dancing. There will be costumes. THERE WILL BE BEEF.
