In a digital age, where people value the fast pace of information and ‘quick fix’ content, it may seem crazy we even set out to print a publication in the first place. More than a few times we asked ourselves if the altitude was getting to us. But printing a magazine isn’t crazy; it’s our way of reclaiming an important medium and introducing a new publishing style to the Canadian Rockies. Here’s a bit more “behind the scenes” with the magazine.

If you’ve picked up a copy of the Canadian Rockies Annual, you’ll know that it’s not a traditional magazine. If you haven’t encountered it yet, you won’t have felt the heft of the book, the quality of the paper and soft-touch cover, or seen the finer details throughout. Why do these things matter? As we’ll lay out below, we want you to experience this publication – to get lost in the content and enjoy the journey. From paper quality to layout, photographs, and words, we want you to feel, well, spoiled.

We’re not free.
We place value on our product and want readers and subscribers to feel invested in the content. You pay good money for your clothes and outdoor gear or to go to a movie. Why not pay for quality content? This allows us to keep the advertising low, but keep the creative juices flowing throughout the year.
We’re not cheap.
Relative to your other expenses in life, $18 won’t break the bank, but it’s more than you’d pay for a magazine at the grocery store. That’s because we chose to go with a premium quality publication – from the choice of paper to the calibre of content. Here is one scenario where you truly pay for what you get.
Enjoy distraction-free reading.
Is it a magazine or a book? Flip through the pages and you’ll notice our editorial never mixes with our ads. We also choose to keep the advertising to a minimum (just 14% in Volume 1), so that you are investing in more articles and photography when you purchase. We think that’s a win-win for our advertisers, too, because limited ad space means more time in the spotlight.
It’s darn good-looking.
Every aspect of design – from typography to colour schemes, visuals and layout – was deliberate and thoughtfully conceived. In fact, if we’ve done our job, you may not even notice some of these things because they are made to create a fluid and enjoyable reading experience. Pay close attention, though, and you’ll perhaps see these finer details.
We pay for our content.
The writers, photographers, and artists who contribute to the magazine (as well as CrowfootMedia.com, we should mention) are paid. This means you get the best content we can curate and you’ve contributed to compensating these creatives by purchasing the magazine.
Our stories are timeless.
We don’t publish news, but rather focus on creating content that will stand the test of time. If you can read it elsewhere, you won’t find it in the Canadian Rockies Annual. Our process is rigorous from beginning to end – from selecting the contributors we work with to editing content with a fine-tooth comb.
